Description

The Preventing Weight Gain and Enhancing Relationships in Underserved Populations (POWER-UP) study sought to form a research-community partnership between Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine and the Betty Jean Kerr People’s Health Centers (PHC) to prevent excess weight gain in adolescent girls at high-risk for adult obesity. A community-based participatory research approach was utilized to adapt Interpersonal Psychotherapy for the Prevention of Excess Weight Gain (IPT-WG) for community-based delivery. In addition, the implementation of IPT-WG was piloted among underserved African American adolescent girls at high-risk for adult obesity and obesity-related health conditions. Our aim in partnering with high-risk communities was to create sustainable reductions in health disparities. Our long-term goal was to assist high-risk populations in the implementation of their own excess weight gain prevention programs.
