 Description

Funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, PLAN with Families is a multi-site collaboration between Washington University in St. Louis, Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Ohio, University of Rochester, and University at Buffalo to provide family based treatment (FBT) for childhood obesity within pediatrician offices.

The PLAN with Families program requires one child between the ages of 6 and 12 years old with overweight/obesity and one parent with overweight/obesity to participate. Families are randomly enrolled to receive either family based treatment (FBT) where families meet regularly with a trained PLAN coach at the pediatric practice to make small, successive changes in families’ eating and physical activity habits, or usual care (UC) where the participating child continues to work directly with their pediatrician. Participating families complete assessments throughout the course of the two-year study. The goal of the study is to determine how effective family based-behavioral treatment (FBT) is when delivered to families within a primary care setting compared to families receiving usual care (UC).
